Rolling Encounters

Encounter tables featuring the monsters in this book appear in the following pages. They are listed by dungeon level and by wilderness terrain type.

Rolling a Dungeon Encounter

  1. Roll 1d4 and 1d10: Look up the results in the Dungeon Encounter Tables, referencing the column for the dungeon level being explored. The result indicates the monster encountered, with the number appearing in parentheses
  2. Number appearing: Roll the dice indicated to determine how many monsters are encountered.

Number Appearing

The values listed in the tables for some monsters have been adjusted to make them more suitable for dungeon encounters. If desired, the referee may use the number appearing value listed in the monster description, for consistency.

Rolling a Wilderness Encounter

  1. Roll 1d8: Look up the result in the Wilderness Encounter By Terrain table, referencing the column for the terrain being explored (or the closest approximation). The result indicates which sub-table to consult.
  2. Roll 1d20: Look up the result in the sub-table indicated.
  3. Number appearing: Roll the dice indicated in the monster’s description to determine how many monsters are encountered. The referee may adjust the numbers based on the size of the adventuring party.

Settled Terrain

Encounters in inhabited rural regions may be treated as Settled terrain on the Wilderness Encounter By Terrain table.

Lost World Encounters

In Lost World or prehistoric settings, any Animal result may be rolled on the Prehistoric Animal table, in sub-table 2.

Aerial Encounters

Always use the Flyer table, in sub-table 1.

Hunting

When characters successfully hunt (see Wilderness Adventuring), roll on the Animal column for the terrain type. For swamps, optionally use the Animal column of the Lake, River sub-table.

NPC Adventurers

Encounters with NPC adventuring parties are listed in the tables as “Beginner Adventurers”, “Expert Adventurers”, “High-Level Cleric”, “High-Level Fighter”, or “High-Level Magic-User”. Guidelines for generating NPC adventurers can be found under Adventuring Parties.
