Turning the Undead

Some divine spell casters can invoke the power of their deity to repel undead monsters, with the chance of success noted in their character class description.

Example of Turning the Undead

A 2nd level cleric encounters a group of 5 rotting undead corpses. The player rolls 2d6, resulting in a roll of 9. The referee, knowing that the monsters encountered are zombies (2 HD), consults the cleric class table for Turning the Undead, checking the 2nd level row. The roll of 9 is higher than the required 7 to turn 2 HD monsters, so the referee informs the player the turning succeeds. The player then rolls 2d6 again to determine the total HD of monsters affected. A roll of 7 means that 3 zombies are turned (a total of 6 HD—the one excess HD has no effect).
